Wescoal combines mining and trading to carve a special position in the market

25 November 2014

Wescoal Trading has contributed significantly to the strategic development of Wescoal Holdings Limited chalking up 67% of the Group's total turnover according to CEO of the junior miner, Andre Bojé.

He says excellent results in the recently announced interim figures reflect the success of the acquisition of MacPhail and its integration with Chandler Coal. "The Wescoal Group is now in the unique position of having a sophisticated trading division servicing the domestic market together with a mining division. The combined channels of expertise have contributed to growth, quality product delivery and a high level of service.

"We also have all the elements for continued growth in an organisation that has personnel with embedded knowledge of coal markets, clients with a demand for coal, a deep understanding of market influences, the ability to source the correct grade of coal to match client needs, and established relationships with mines and customers," Bojé points out.

The Trading division is currently distributing 100k tons of coal products to customers around the country. It has introduced an environmentally friendly programme to reduce its carbon footprint through switching to rail where possible while keeping the coal from contact with the ground during the distribution process. "The supply of both bulk and bagged coal and anthracite by road and rail to the point of consumption, to diverse customers and industries throughout South Africa, is made from our bulk depot operations countrywide," he says.

"Coupled to this, Wescoal Trading's unique logistical and depot structures strategically support the distribution network locally and cross-border for example, to the neighbouring states of Swaziland and Lesotho.

"Our commitment to transformation – Wescoal has a total BEE score of 67.34% as a level 4 contributor to BBBEE status. – has boosted business.. On the Social Responsibility side the Group sponsors educational institutes, schools, orphanages and upliftment centres, " Bojé concludes

Wescoal Holdings Limited mines, processes, supplies, sells and distributes coal. It is listed on the main board of the JSE and its key strategic thrust is to be a leading junior coal miner with a sustainable resource base and a coal trading operation
